Merry Axemas - A Guitar Christmas Vol. 1 & 2

Nov 7, 2009

A tour de force of guitar players Steve Vai has known rock around the Christmas tree in this must-have Yuletide album. Vai, who began his career as a member of Frank Zappa's band and in more recent years has been David Lee Roth's partner in crime, transcends both roles by playing matchmaker between a few of our more inventive (albeit overlooked) guitar slingers and some of the best-loved Christmas carols. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's proboscis has never glowed quite so brightly as when Kenny Wayne Shepherd cranks up his guitar and takes us down an edgy blues journey. Eric Johnson's clear-as-a-Christmas-bell tones are a joy to listen to in his rendition of "The First Nowell." The standout, however, is Jeff Beck's haunting and emotional "Amazing Grace.

Steve Vai takes the concept of pairing guitar shredders and Christmas classics one step further, putting another string of pickers on the tree with a little less spectacular results than on his first outing. Which isn't to say that this album is a lump of coal. There are some riveting moments, especially when Steve Stevens dry-gulches "Do You Hear What I Hear," first lulling the listener into reverential submission with an almost medieval rendering of this time-honored classic, then shifting gears and jetting into Christmas future with some unconventional note-bending. Ted Nugent's "Deck the Halls" reminds one why the Amboy Dukes and Damn Yankees were appealing, before the Nuge filled himself full of hot air. An added plus is Robin Trower's rather restrained "O Little Town of Bethlehem." One complaint: the players tend to lose the melody line in their efforts to tart up Christmas classics into something experimental

Bon Jovi - The Circle

Nov 5, 2009

The Circle is the title of the eleventh studio album by rock band Bon Jovi. Produced by John Shanks, the album was released November 2, 2009, with the new single "We Weren't Born to Follow" premiering on radio August 17. The album was released in Germany on October 30, 2009.

In an interview given to Rolling Stone Magazine, guitarist Richie Sambora says the album is a return to "rock and roll" and said "There’s going to be some big choruses on there. It sounds like Bon Jovi, but it sounds fresh. We experimented with a lot of new sounds and had a really good time working with John Shanks, who is also a really good guitar player, so he and I did a lot of ‘weaseling’ with the guitar sounds. There are a lot of really good guitar sounds and new kind atmospheres on the new Bon Jovi record, that I think makes it really modern. I think people are going to dig it, man. And it rocks hard."

The Circle tour will ensue the following year, "2010, probably spring time we’ll get going. And we’re going to go for a long time. It’s going to be a big one." Sambora stated.

In an interview on UK radio station Absolute Radio, Jon Bon Jovi stated the album title has multiple meanings. It stands for the fact that a circle is never ending, and that it also refers to Bon Jovi's inner circle - stating that "in this organization, the circle is very difficult to get into, and even more difficult to get out of."

Creed - Full Circle

Full Circle is the fourth album by the American rock band Creed, released on October 27, 2009.[8] It is Creed's first release since their 2004 compilation album Greatest Hits, their first studio album since 2001's Weathered, and their first studio album to feature original bassist Brian Marshall in almost exactly a decade. The record was produced by Howard Benson. The album was completed on July 31, 2009, as announced by Scott Stapp. Four days later, the album cover was revealed through the band's official e-news.

The album is a mix of roots and heavy, but it's slightly different from Creed's previous work in that it features heavier songs in drop tunings. There are also more guitar solos, as heard on the album, originally announced by Mark Tremonti on his Twitter page when he stated that he is "very proud of the solos on this record."

Aaron Neville

Aaron Neville - Christmas Prayer

The opening title track of Aaron Neville's 2005 Christmas album, which extends a heartfelt prayer to those in need, has proved to be resoundingly poignant, since the singer's beloved hometown, New Orleans, was destroyed--leaving thousands homeless and displaced--by that September's Hurricane Katrina. While the shadow of the tragedy lingers over the first song, the rest of CHRISTMAS PRAYER does its best to provide a hopeful, celebratory spirit. On Neville's version of "Go Tell It on the Mountain," the holiday classic becomes a jubilant, upbeat soul tune, while "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" showcases the singer's trademark angelic voice. Although Christmas albums can be paint-by-number affairs, this warm Yuletide record stands out, thanks to Neville's emotionally compelling performances.

Aaron Neville - Soulful Christmas

About: Logic would dictate that if Aaron Neville can't make it a soulful Christmas, nobody can. Neville's one of the only mere mortals who can actually deliver on the old saw about having a voice so sweet he could sing the phone book. Problem is that Neville, who is notorious for liking the wrong career choices, probably would sing the phone book if someone signed the check. Consequently, even though he includes the typical standards on Soulful Christmas, they still ring true with his magical voice. "Such a Night" and "Louisiana Christmas Day," however, stand out with soul and are required additions to any funky holiday party mix. --Michael Ruby

Clay Aiken - Merry Christmas With Love

Nov 4, 2009

Given that Clay Aiken's success story is a little like that of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's underdog-made-good tale, it's entirely appropriate that the AMERICAN IDOL runner-up would record a Christmas album. That MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE is so defiantly traditional just adds to the warm-and-fuzzy vibes. With nary a hint of hip-hop or pop-punk to be found, the record is a testament to the evergreen appeal of the heavily orchestrated holiday epics of Christmas past. Aiken's bell-like voice is perfectly suited to the sweeping, old-time Disney/MGM production style here, and his evangelical Christian beliefs no doubt add to the sincerity with which he imbues these performances. Listening to the warm chestnut glow of "Sleigh Ride" or "Winter Wonderland," listeners might be forgiven for thinking they just stepped onto the set of a 1940s Bing Crosby film. Of course, Aiken can't resist adding a little of his trademark R&B spice to the eggnog, and this extra touch is what makes MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE accessible to holiday-music lovers of all inclinations.
